Our Story

Mountain Community Online School (MCOS) was created as a deliberate extension of the beliefs and practices of The Mountain Community School (TMCS).

TMCS was founded on a clear educational philosophy: students learn best when learning is

connected to the real world, guided by strong relationships, and supported by clear expectations.

As TMCS matured, its leadership began to consider how these same principles could serve students beyond a single physical campus.

From its earliest days, TMCS emphasized experiential learning, interdisciplinary thinking, and adult responsibility for student growth.

Learning was designed to be active, reflective, and meaningful, not passive or disconnected.

A belief-led decision, not a reaction

MCOS was not created in response to trends or requests. It was developed through professional reflection and conviction.

TMCS leadership recognized a growing reality. Many families are living in more flexible and complex circumstances, whether due to geography, health needs, travel, athletics, or family responsibilities. At the same time, students still need structure, accountability, and meaningful learning experiences in order to thrive.

MCOS was designed at the intersection of those truths. It reflects a belief that flexibility in where learning happens should never require flexibility in expectations for learning.

Learn How MCOS Works

Built on the foundation of
The Mountain Community School

Mountain Community Online School is operated by The Mountain Community School, bringing the care and accountability of a proven charter organization to a statewide online program.

This connection is foundational. MCOS is governed by the same board, supported by the same leadership infrastructure, and grounded in the same commitment to responsible stewardship and student-centered design. The systems that support TMCS, including governance, compliance, and accountability, form the backbone of MCOS.

Rather than inventing a new model, TMCS extended one that already works.

Call To Action

Experiential learning as a shared philosophy

Experiential learning is not an add-on at TMCS. It is a core belief.

Students at The Mountain Community School learn through projects, inquiry, outdoor education, and real-world problem solving. They are expected to apply learning, reflect on their work, and make connections across disciplines. Adults design these experiences intentionally and remain accountable for student progress.

When designing MCOS, the goal was not to recreate a traditional school day online. The goal was to preserve this experiential philosophy while adapting it thoughtfully to a remote environment.

Translating experiential learning to an online school

At Mountain Community Online School, experiential learning takes shape through Climb Higher Projects. These quarterly, cross-curricular projects are the online expression of the same philosophy that guides TMCS.

Climb Higher Projects require students to apply academic skills through exploration, creation, and reflection. Projects are aligned to North Carolina standards and supported by school staff, but designed to extend beyond the screen and into students’ homes, communities, and interests.

This approach ensures that online learning remains active rather than passive, and that students demonstrate understanding through meaningful work rather than isolated tasks.

Call To Action

Flexibility designed with intention

MCOS was designed to fit into the realities of modern family life while maintaining clear expectations for students.

Flexibility in location allows students to learn from anywhere in North Carolina. Flexibility in delivery allows families to integrate school into their daily lives. However, the structure of the school day, expectations for attendance, and standards for engagement remain consistent.

Flexibility expands access. Structure sustains learning.

An exceptional remote-learning experience:

Students participate in daily live classes in English Language Arts and Mathematics, with additional live instruction in Science and Social Studies. Live teaching provides direct instruction, real-time feedback, and consistent academic expectations.

All coursework is aligned to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and delivered through a proven online learning platform.

Each student is assigned a Success Coach who serves as the primary point of contact for families. Success Coaches monitor attendance and engagement daily, review academic progress, and communicate regularly with parents.

When a student begins to struggle, the Success Coach intervenes early, coordinates support, and ensures concerns are addressed quickly and consistently.

In addition to core coursework, students complete quarterly Climb Higher Projects. These experiential, cross-curricular projects require students to apply academic skills through real-world exploration, creation, and presentation.

Projects are aligned to grade-level standards and supported by school staff, helping students build independence, problem-solving skills, and confidence.

MCOS was intentionally designed to address the most common challenges of online learning. Rather than relying on self-paced coursework alone, the program blends live instruction, defined schedules, and proactive adult oversight to ensure students remain engaged and supported.

Every student is known, monitored, and supported through clear systems and assigned responsibility.

Adult responsibility and accountability

A defining belief carried from TMCS into MCOS is that adults must remain responsible for student success.

MCOS combines daily live instruction, defined schedules, and consistent monitoring of attendance and engagement. Licensed teachers and assigned school staff take responsibility for follow-through, communication, and early intervention when students struggle.

This balance allows students to build independence while ensuring they are supported by adults who know them well and are accountable for their progress.

A statewide expression of a local school culture

While Mountain Community Online School serves students across North Carolina, its culture is grounded in the same values that shape The Mountain Community School. High expectations, experiential learning, and responsible stewardship remain central, regardless of physical location.

MCOS exists to serve students who need flexibility, but who also deserve challenge, structure, and meaningful connection to their learning.
