Academic Calendar

Mountain Community Online School follows a full public school academic calendar aligned with North Carolina requirements, designed to provide both consistency and flexibility for families learning in an online environment.

Key dates and expectations are outlined below to support planning and clarity.

First Day of School – August 17

Last Day of School – June 11

MCOS operates on a complete public school calendar that meets state requirements while leveraging the flexibility made possible through an online learning model.

The academic year is divided into four quarters.

Student progress is monitored continuously throughout each quarter, with grades updated regularly and shared with families through ongoing communication.

Quarter transitions provide natural checkpoints for reflection, adjustment, and planning.

MCOS observes traditional school holidays and scheduled breaks throughout the year.

On school holidays and planned breaks:

  • Live instructional sessions do not take place
  • Students are not expected to complete daily coursework unless otherwise communicated

These scheduled breaks support balance and sustainability across the school year.

In addition to scheduled holidays, the structure of MCOS allows families flexibility when needed.

Because instruction is delivered through an online model:

  • Live instructional sessions are recorded and available for later viewing
  • Coursework can be accessed from any location
  • Students can continue learning while traveling or managing other obligations

This design allows families to take short breaks as necessary without students losing academic ground, while still maintaining clear expectations for engagement and progress.

Flexibility is built into the model and supported through consistent monitoring and follow-up..

Students are expected to engage in learning on instructional days.

Attendance and engagement are monitored through:

  • Participation in live instruction or review of recorded sessions
  • Completion of assigned coursework
  • Activity and progress within the learning platform

Success Coaches monitor engagement daily and work proactively with families to address concerns and support students in staying on track…

As a North Carolina public charter school, MCOS participates in all required state assessments.

Testing occurs near the end of the school year. Specific dates, schedules, and expectations are communicated clearly to families well in advance.

Participation in required assessments is expected of all students.

The MCOS academic calendar is designed to provide predictability without rigidity.

Clear rhythms, transparent expectations, and the ability to learn from anywhere allow families to plan confidently while ensuring students remain engaged, supported, and accountable throughout the school year.
