Mountain Community Online School is a North Carolina public charter school serving students in grades 4–8 across the state.

Our admissions process is designed to be clear, accessible, and supportive while ensuring families understand the structure, expectations, and commitment required for success in an online learning environment.

Admission is not based on academic ability, background, or prior online experience.the end of March and will reopen following the lottery. We use this time to verify information and prepare for the lottery.

The admissions process is designed to be straightforward.

Families receive guidance and communication throughout the process to ensure a smooth transition.

When applications exceed available seats, MCOS conducts a random lottery in accordance with North Carolina charter school law.

Lottery procedures and timelines are communicated clearly to families. Priority groups, when applicable, are applied in accordance with state requirements.

MCOS offers flexibility, but it is not a self-paced or hands-off program.

Families should expect:

  • Daily student engagement with coursework
  • Regular communication with Success Coaches
  • Participation in live instruction or review of recorded sessions
  • Follow-through on attendance and academic expectations
