School leadership
Day-to-day leadership of Mountain Community Online School is guided by a dedicated School Director role that is central to the student and family experience.
The School Director is responsible for instructional leadership, student support systems, staff supervision, and daily school operations.
This role ensures that the school’s vision is consistently translated into practice across instruction, experiential learning, and family communication.
School leadership operates within established systems and accountability structures provided by Mountain Community Schools, ensuring continuity, clarity, and responsible oversight.

Leadership grounded in accountability
Leadership at MCOS is designed around clear ownership and follow-through.
Licensed teachers are responsible for instruction and assessment. Assigned school staff monitor attendance, engagement, and academic progress. Leadership ensures systems are in place to identify concerns early, coordinate support, and respond consistently.
Responsibility for student success is shared, visible, and monitored.

Experiential leadership
Leadership at MCOS is committed to preserving the experiential learning philosophy that defines Mountain Community Schools.
School leaders ensure that Climb Higher Projects remain central to the student experience and are thoughtfully designed, aligned to North Carolina standards, and supported by staff. Experiential learning is treated as a core instructional strategy rather than an enrichment activity.
Leadership monitors quality and consistency to ensure these experiences support both academic growth and student engagement.
Governance and oversight
Mountain Community Online School is operated by Mountain Community Schools and governed by the TMCS Board of Directors.
This governance structure provides oversight for academic outcomes, financial stewardship, and compliance with state requirements. Leadership operates within these structures to ensure transparency, accountability, and long-term stability.
